Does a model need its own theory?

A model implicitly uses some theory or other.

Suppose that Smith steals a car from his brother, and I model that data by positing hatred on Smith’s part towards his brother.

That model implicitly assumes a theory of human conduct, and the same is true of any other empirical model.
