What does “something is known causally” mean?

Causal knowledge is knowledge that is acquired on the basis of a causal connection. I know that fire causes smoke. I see smoke. I infer that there is, or recently was, fire. That is causal knowledge.

In some contexts, ‘causal knowledge’ can also refer to knowledge of a causal connection or law, an example being your knowledge that heated bodies expand.
