Why do some smart people have less emotional intelligence than they do in other areas?

Two reasons.

First, ‘emotional intelligence’ is not emotional intelligence; it is bureaucratic obsequiousness.

Second, the ‘smart’ people you have in mind are not smart. They are damaged geeks who don’t have any kind of intelligence, including the ‘emotional’ kind (whatever that is).
